To whom it may concern,

The Human Powered Submarine is an engineering project researched and manufactured by students at University of California, San Diego. Students design, machine, build and govern every part of the project. At year’s end the team participates in an international competition where we race against other universities from around the world for the fastest time.

The UCSD Human Powered Submarine team (HPS) is committed to applying theoretical concepts learned at the Jacobs School of Engineering towards the practical application of building a submarine.  Our team is a collection of 20 dedicated engineering students who are determined to break the world record for the fastest human-powered, non-propeller driven submarine.

UCSD has participated in this competition for the past ten years, and has been extremely successful.  During a previous competition in the summer of 2004 our team earned 1st place in the propeller division with the submarine Inviscid, which was a tremendous success.  In fact, the 2000 team broke the world record for the fastest non-propeller, fish-fin like motion submarine. The goal this year is to improve upon the record setting design and to break the world record for UCSD.

In order to accomplish our goal of competing in the 2007 event, our team needs support from businesses and local organizations to meet the costs of design and production.  This is a great way for companies to increase their exposure to the community and UCSD through advertising with the submarine team. Our team attracted extensive media coverage from many newspapers and news television stations with the 2006 submarine Sebastian when it earned 1st Place. Other coverage includes the submarine Inviscid which was featured on a television episode of Animal Planet dedicated to “The Most Extreme – Divers.”  For the 2007 competition, as with prior competitions, we will actively pursue media coverage to provide outstanding publicity for our sponsors.

We would greatly appreciate if your firm would support our team’s project with a tax deductible donation in the form of monetary donations, products, or services.  In addition, your company’s logo can be placed on the submarine when we take it to the competition and race it against other subs from around the world. We can provide you with more detailed information on our specific needs and tax deduction information.  Thank you for your time, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
